TIME Magazine has named “The Silence Breakers” who spoke out against sexual harassment and assault–including actress Ashley Judd and pop star Taylor Swift–as “Person of the Year” for 2017. Judd and Swift appear on the cover of the magazine’s “Person of the Year” issue alongside women like former Uber engineer Susan Fowler, who exposed the company’s sexist culture online, which eventually led to the firing of CEO Travis Kalanick. “The galvanizing actions of the women on our cover…along with those of hundreds of others, and of many men as well, have unleashed one of the highest-velocity shifts in our culture since the 1960s,” TIME editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said in a statement. The selection of the “Silence Breakers” as the most influential people of the year coincides with TODAY viewers choosing the “#MeToo” movement as TIME’s Person of the Year in an online poll earlier this week. While Judd helped bring down Hollywood honcho Harvey Weinstein when she went on record about his abusive behavior in The New York Times, Swift successfully sued ex-radio DJ David Mueller for groping her at a meet-and-greet four years ago.
