Ahead of the 2019 MTV VMAs airing on Monday, August 26, new information has been revealed about the awkward moment between Kanye West, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé during the 2009 ceremony. According to Billboard, sources close to the situation revealed this week that Beyoncé cried after West stormed the stage as Swift was accepting the Moon Person for Best Female Video for her music video for “You Belong With Me.” Van Toffler, former president of Viacom Media Networks and Logo Group, tells the outlet that, after the blunder, he walked backstage to urge Big Machine Label Group founder Scott Borchetta to convince the singer to stay. It was at that exact moment that he saw an emotional Beyoncé standing next to her father Mathew Knowles. “I walk behind the stage–and sure enough there is Beyoncé and her dad, and she is crying,” he recalls. “She was like, ‘I didn’t know this was going to happen, I feel so bad for her.’” Toffler ended up suggesting that Beyoncé give Swift an opportunity to thank her her fans if and when she won her own award. Bey ended up winning Video of the Year, and graciously split her time on stage with Swift.
