Lizzo’s 2-Year-Old Song Might Still Qualify at 2020 Grammys

    • Lizzo’s two-year-old song “Truth Hurts” may be eligible for the 2020 Grammy Awards.
    • Older songs typically only compete at the Grammys when a live version of the song is released during the current eligibility period.
    • “Truth Hurts” was released as a stand-alone single in 2017, but has never been submitted for Grammy contention and appears on an album released during the eligibility period.
  • While Lizzo’s break thought hit “Truth Hurts” is two years old, the Recording Academy is considering granting the track eligibility for 2020. According to the AP, older songs that become hits long after their initial release can typically only compete at the Grammys when a live version of the song is released during the current Grammys eligibility period. Since “Truth Hurts” was released as a stand-alone single in 2017, has never been submitted for Grammy contention, and appears on an album released during the eligibility period for the upcoming show it may qualify. Songs and albums released from October 1, 2018, through August 31, 2019 qualify for next year’s awards, and “Truth Hurts” appears on the deluxe edition of Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You LP, which was released this year.
