Millennial Viewers Slam Friends for Being “Sexist” & “Homophobic”

Friends became available on Netflix in the U.K. at the end of 2017 and millennials who have just started tuning in are unimpressed, calling the show “homophobic” and “sexist” on Twitter. Storylines perceived as problematic include Chandler mocking his cross-dressing father, Chandler worrying about being perceived as gay and Ross being weirded out by the fact that his daughter’s nanny is a man. Viewers also complained about Monica being fat shamed by her so-called friends far too often. “It’s crazy to watch Friends on Netflix now and realize how homophobic and misogynistic the show really was,” one critic tweeted. Friends aired on NBC for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004.
